The displayed works are accomplished through the use of ancient pictorial techniques passed on by Cennino Cennini in his “Book of Art” (1370-1440) and the Sienese school of painting techniques (to preserve the ancient art of great masters discovered through careful the study of some of the most ancient treaties by Cennino Cennini and Giorgio Vasari). Each icon or biccherna is painted on antique wooden panel.
The selection of the choicest materials is of the utmost importance in order to accomplish a superb level of my artwork I do. In order to make the paint, powdered pigments, rubber and resins of natural origin mixed with egg tempera. The painting is done with tempera, a highly refined method with great pictorial qualities by the brilliant colours to evoke masterly effects of luminosity. I use the Lapis lazuli blue ultramarine pigment extracted from a semi-precious stone. The painting methods described by Cennino Cennini are followed in order to preserve the whole style and spirit of the original works. The gildings are accomplished through the use of thin leaves of pure gold with previous spreading of a layer of Armenian plaster over a stratum of a preparation composed of plaster and glue for gilders (rigorously exempt of chemical and synthetic products). The decorative motifs (diadem, precious cloths embroidered in pure gold) of the halos and frames are entirely accomplished through the use of instruments, called burins or dies used by Tuscan goldsmiths artisans.
Pastiglia decoration: The technique of duplicating the effect of carving or low relief on a surface by building up a rather thick layer of gesso, which is then modeled or tooled and enriched with paint or gilt.
