 Medieval Art
The Medieval Art Overview
For Medieval art we usually refer to the art of Western world (Europe, Middle East, North Africa in particular) during the period between 8th and 14th century. Medieval Art includes many periods characterized by different regions, genres, revivals, crafts and the artists themselves.
Medieval Art Styles
IDespite the difficulty to create a clear scheme of periods, art historians are agree to classify Medieval art into major styles that include: Early Christian art, Migration Period art, Byzantine art, Insular art, Pre-Romanesque and Romanesque art, and Gothic art. Actually, we can recognize other minor periods within these central ones, influenced by political and cultural events but confined in small european regions anyway.
The Medieval Art Media
Medieval art characters produced many kind of media such as sculpture, metalwork and mosaics, manuscripts, stained glass, but mostly remains all of which have had a higher survival rate than other media like fresco wall-paintings or textiles.
Medieval Art Features
Medieval art was born by the heritage of the “Ancient Rome” and the traditional art of the early Christian church. These styles enclosed with the "Barbarian" culture of Northern Europe and create a unique “blend” of classical, early Christian and "barbarian" elements. So we can see iconographic paintings and sculptures representing religious characters or mosaics and metal works about Bible tales.
